It runs a mere 24 pages, and the only words to be found are on the cover and in the colophon, but its sad, lonely characters and its bleak world are often more moving than those in [bigger works]. Its jobless robot seems to serve as a commentary on the way we treat the homeless (as less than human), judging their lack of marketable or useful skills, begrudging them the small pleasures on which they waste their few coins. Its single-minded aging inventor is equally alone, passing his days inspecting parts and able to pursue his dream only through persistence and hap. It’s sort of like the depressing version of the Johnny Cash song “One Piece at a Time,” about a man who builds a car by sneaking out each part in his lunchbox from the factory where he works. Martz could flesh out his world a little more (“why?” doesn’t get answered hardly at all), but there is deep feeling in his work, despite the cartooniness of it all.
A very nice review of Heaven All Day from Paste Magazine.
With Heaven All Day Martz continues to grow as a cartoonist. In this wordless story, Martz merges his draughtsman skills and animation sensibilities to produce a wonderful story filled with isolation, melancholy and, in the end, hope.

7th Annual Joe Shuster Awards: Winners Announced « THE JOE SHUSTER AWARDS

I am very honoured that Heaven All Day took home the Gene Day Award for Self-Publishers at the Joe Shuster Awards for Canadian comics this weekend.

I am also thrilled that the award for Outstanding Publisher went to Koyama Press. When it comes to fostering a sense of community, fellowship, and outright love in our little world of weirdos, there is no one who comes close to Anne Koyama.

I’ll be at the MoCCA comics festival this weekend in New York City.

I have a number of items debuting at the show — the Xeric-funded printing of my comic book Heaven All Day, issue 2 of my Machine Gum minicomic, and the Trexels print with Koyama Press. All of these will be for sale on my site when I return from MoCCA.

I’ll have some copies of all my previous minicomics, and other prints as well. Come say hello!

→ Xeric Foundation Comic Book Self-Publishing Grants for 2010

I’ve very pleased to have been given a grant from the Xeric Foundation this year to publish Heaven All Day in a format that does not involve photocopying.

→ Nominations for the 2011 Joe Shuster Awards

I was alerted via Twitter this morning that Heaven All Day was nominated for a Joe Shuster Award / The Gene Day Award for Self-Publishers.

I took a cue from What Things Do, and reformatted the online edition of Heaven All Day so that the only navigation is scrolling. No more inefficient click-for-next-page business.
Looks great on the iPad, FYI.

And here’s the final version of my new minicomic’s cover. I’ll have this at MoCCA and at TCAF. I’m off to the printer now, but will post a few sample pages when I return.

Six page preview of Heaven All Day

I know what you’re thinking. “John, when are you going to post a six-page preview of this Heaven All Day comic?” Well, my friend, today is your lucky day. Behold! A six-page preview of Heaven All Day.

A finished panel

Here’s a panel for a comic I’m working on. The story is currently titled Heaven All Day, but who knows how I’ll feel when it’s done..
